They solve different problems, which is exactly why one direction of this conversion costs you something and the other does not.

What is GLB?

GLB is the binary flavour of glTF — one file carrying geometry, UV coordinates, materials, textures and a scene graph together. It is what the web, Blender, Unity, Unreal and Three.js all read natively, and it is what this site's generator hands you.

What is OBJ?

OBJ is a plain-text mesh format from the late eighties that every 3D application on earth can read. Geometry, normals and UV coordinates live in the .obj itself; materials live in a separate .mtl file beside it.

The honest part

What survives the GLB → OBJ conversion

Every conversion is a trade. Any tool that tells you otherwise is lying to you, so here is the exact ledger before you commit.

Survives

  • Every triangle. The mesh is written out vertex for vertex, in plain text you can open in an editor.
  • UV coordinates. Unlike STL, OBJ has a place for them, so a later re-texture still lines up.
  • Vertex normals. Smooth shading survives the trip instead of being recomputed by the next tool.
  • Object names and groups. Separate meshes stay separate, which matters when you split the model later.

Does not survive

  • Materials and textures. OBJ keeps those in a companion .mtl file, and this converter writes only the .obj — so the mesh arrives untextured.
  • PBR values. Roughness and metalness have no representation in a classic .mtl anyway.
  • Animation and rigs. OBJ is a static format. Anything that moved is baked flat.
  • File size. Not lost so much as multiplied: plain-text coordinates are far larger than the same mesh in binary.

Need the texture with it? Keep the original GLB alongside the OBJ — it already holds the images, and any tool that reads GLB will read them. The other converters are all free too.

When should you run this conversion?

OBJ is the lowest common denominator of 3D interchange. Reach for it when the tool at the other end is older than glTF, or when you want geometry plus UVs in a format you can read in a text editor.

  • Feeding an older pipeline. Sculpting tools, mesh processors and academic software often list OBJ first and glTF not at all.
  • Keeping the UVs. Unlike STL, OBJ has a place for texture coordinates, so a later re-texture in Substance or Blender still lines up.
  • Debugging a mesh. An OBJ is human-readable — you can open it and see the vertices, which is occasionally the fastest way to work out what went wrong.
  • Handing over geometry only. Because the material lives in a separate .mtl, sending just the .obj is a clean way to share shape without shipping the texture work.

Expect a larger file and an untextured mesh: plain-text coordinates are several times the size of the same binary geometry, and the images stay behind in the GLB. Check the model in the viewer before you commit to the conversion.
