What is 3MF?

What is GLB?

GLB is the binary flavour of glTF — one file carrying geometry, UV coordinates, materials, textures and a scene graph together. It is what the web, Blender, Unity, Unreal and Three.js all read natively, and it is what this site's generator hands you.

The honest part

What survives the 3MF → GLB conversion

Every conversion is a trade. Any tool that tells you otherwise is lying to you, so here is the exact ledger before you commit.

Survives

  • Every triangle. The mesh is re-wrapped, not rebuilt, so the geometry is identical to what went in.
  • Whatever material the source had. If the original carried colour or textures, they come across into the GLB.
  • One single file. Geometry and any textures end up inside one .glb, so there is nothing to lose in transit.
  • Instant web preview. A GLB opens in every browser-based viewer, including the free one on this site.

Does not survive

  • Nothing is invented. A source file with no material produces a grey GLB — no converter can add colour that was never there.
  • Animation. The static scene is exported, so rigged or animated sources arrive frozen.
  • External references. Textures that lived in separate files beside the original are not fetched.
  • Format-specific extras. Anything the original stored outside its meshes does not survive the round trip.

GLB is the format to keep. It holds geometry and texture in one file and every modern engine reads it, which is why the generator on this page outputs it. Convert onwards whenever a slicer or an older pipeline needs something else.

When should you run this conversion?

Reach for this when a model that was built for a printer now needs an audience. Slicer software is the only thing that reads 3MF, and a browser is not slicer software.

  • Showing a print online. Web viewers, product pages and AR previews all want glTF.
  • Getting a printable design into a game engine. Unity, Unreal and Godot read GLB directly.
  • Rendering it properly. Once it is a GLB you can assign real materials and light it, which a 3MF was never meant for.
  • Archiving in an open, versioned format. glTF is a maintained standard with wide tooling, which makes it a safer long-term container.

The mesh comes across intact, including its shared vertices; slicer-specific data such as supports and print profiles does not, because none of it is geometry. Check the mesh in the viewer to see exactly what you have.
